History of the AAIO

1982 - 1984

Initial efforts were made to organize the Association of Asian Indians in Ophthalmology in the United States of America.

1984 - 1985

First Formal meeting of the association was held in Gaylord's restaurant in San Francisco, California. The constitution and by laws of the association were approved and the tax exempt status was obtained. Morton F. Goldberg M.D. of the University of Illinois was the Chief Guest who gave an excellent presentation in relation to Indo-American Ophthalmology practice. G. Venkataswamy was the Guest of Honor on the occasion. A plaque was presented to both the guests.

1985 - 1986

Annual meeting of the association was held in Keshwany's Restaurant in New Orleans, Louisiana. Herbert E. Kaufman, M.D. from Louisiana State University School of Medicine was the chief guest on the occasion. He discussed the exchange program of Indian Ophthalmologist. Dr. Kaufman was presented with a plaque of appreciation from the association.

1986 - 1987

The annual meeting of the association was held at Ramada Inn, Dallas. Charles Schepens M.D. of Retina Foundation in Boston, Massachusetts was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Dr. Schepens elaborated upon the exchange of Indian Ophthalmologists and presented some new thoughts on how to increase the program. Dr. Schepens was presented with a plaque of appreciation.

Our association has initiated new efforts which will allow Ophthalmologists from India to obtain short term sub-specialty training in the United States of America.
